ST COLUMB MAJOR UNION HILL SW 9063-9163 (north side) St Columb Major 17/267 Piers and wall at the entrance gateway to Glencairn

GV II

Piers and walls with gateway. Mid-late C19. Granite ashlar. Cast iron railings and gates. The entrance forms a screen. Four rusticated square plan piers, about 3 metres high, with modillion cornice and stepped caps surmounted by urns. The central pair of piers have pair of cast iron gates with trefoil finials to the top rails. Low battered ashlar wall with moulded coping swept forward to right and left with plain spear-headed railings, up to the outer piers. The ashlar wall is continued to right as a boundary wall, on a rusticated plinth with stepped moulded copings and the railings removed. This extends about 20 metres with one ashlar pier on a battered rock-faced plinth with blind panels, cornice and knob finial; terminal pier in rock- faced rubble with pyramidal cap.
