Details
ST COLUMB MAJOR UNION SQUARE (east side) SW 9063-9163 St Columb Major 17/273 Barley Sheaf Inn - GV II
Inn. Early - mid C19, with additions and alterations of later C19 and C20. Stone rubble, rendered and lined out. Hipped slate roof with ridge tiles. Stack at the right side with rendered shaft. Plan: The inn is angled along the line of the street, with one bay splayed back to left and 2 to right. The entrance is off-centre to left, with one room to right and smaller room to left. Rear wing to right. Exterior: 2 storeys, an asymmetrical front. The 2 bays to right have two 4-pane sashes of C19 at ground and first floor, with brick segmental arches. 6-panelled door with pilasters and panelled frieze to left. The bay to left is splayed back and has two 4-pane sashes at ground floor and one at first floor. The right side has a gable end in rubble, with 4-pane sash with brick segmental head at ground and first floor. Narrow gabled bay added to right in granite ashlar with similar 4-pane sash at ground and first floor. Attached to end right is a lower 2-storey service wing, with three 4-pane sashes at first floor, 4-pane sash and door at ground floor; front lateral stack with brick shaft. Interior: Not inspected.
