SX 15 SW FOWEY FORE STREET, Fowey (North West side) 868-0/2/101 Nos.27 AND 29 13/03/51


Pair of probable merchants' houses or possibly one large house. Early C17. MATERIALS: rubble side walls and ground floor, 1st and 2nd floors with plastered and timber-framed front, jet tied to 2nd floor; pair of bitumen-grouted slate roofs end on to the street. PLAN: deep plan, deeper to left, with 2 parallel ranges set at right angles to street with gables facing. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys; symmetrical2-window front. 2nd floor has flat 3-light mullioned windows with leaded glass, the one on the right original, the other one a C20 copy. 1st floor has original S-light (plus sidelights) ovolo-moulded mullioned oriel windows with ovolo-moulded sills, each window carried on a pair of shaped and carved brackets with plastered cove between, left-hand window with old casements, other window with old casement to central light, otherwise with possibly original leaded lights. Ground floor has old moulded 2-light casement on the left and similar copy on the right with pair of old external shutters; pair of doorways separated by a pier of rubble masonry to the centre; partly-glazed doors. INTERIOR not inspected. This is a rare jet tied C17 pair of merchants' houses in Cornwall and one of four C17 jet tied buildings in Fowey, retaining interior features of interest.
