WEYMOUTH SY6778NE ST MARY STREET
873-1/23/325 (West side)
18/06/70 Nos.84, 85 AND 86 GV II Offices, with shop. Mid C19. Rendered, slate roof. A large
classical-style commercial block, returning to Bond Street.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys, 8 x 6 bays, with giant Composite
pilasters dividing the first and second floor bays, and paired
pilasters to the Bond Street frontage. All windows are plain
sashes in reveals, on stone sills; the second floor units are
near-square, and the first floor very deep, to near floor
level.
Ground floor to Nos 84 & 85 is in channelled rustication, in 4
high and one lower arched openings, filled with plate glass
taken to the plinth level. The first bay has a pair of
panelled doors under a deep transom light including the arch,
the 5th bay has doors under a fanlight, and in a moulded
architrave. Above the arcade is a frieze with cornice, between
consoles. A full classical entablature, and balustrade with
plain blockings above the pilasters, returned also to Bond
Street.
Ground floor to No.86 is a C20 insertion with plate glass,
returned to the right. This return has 2 blind lights, two
2-light casements, and two 9-pane sashes at second floor,
above 2 blanks and four 15-pane sashes. At ground floor the
shop front returns under the blind bays, then continues with
channelled rustication under a bold moulded cornice, with a
large tripartite sash with stone mullions and 2 single sashes,
all to stooled sills.
INTERIOR not inspected.
This is a deliberate piece of grand urban design, looking back
to the dignity of the C18, and it is unfortunate that the
ground floor has been modified. It is echoed in the adjacent
Nos 8 & 9 Bond Street (qv), which is carried out in less
scholarly manner.
