WEYMOUTH SY6681SW WEST END, Radipole
873-1/11/508 (South side)
07/08/73 Nos.4 and 5 West End Cottages GV II Pair of houses. Dated EB 1731 (Buckler or Bristow), with late
C20 extensions at each end. Rubble, concrete tile roof,
formerly thatched.
A long, single-depth building adjoining a small stream which
joins the River Wey near Causeway House (qv). The overall form
and layout could be from the C17, but substantial external and
internal changes have been made.
In 2 storeys; the entrance front, facing N, has an early
2-light casement and a C20 9-pane light at the eaves, with the
inscribed flush stone panel between. At ground floor, with an
extension to the left, is a small 2-light (part of No.4), then
a wide plank door with inserted square light, and a fixed
light. To the right is a flat-roofed extension. There are 2
ridge stacks, at the gables of the original building. The S
side has four 2- and 3-light early casements at the eaves,
under a deep plain wooden eaves board, and 3- or 4-light to
the ground floor, with a C20 door in an original openings. To
left is the flat-roofed extension, and to right a more
sympathetic full-height addition with swept-down roof.
INTERIOR: inspected only at ground floor; it has low ceiling
heights characteristic of the C17 or earlier, and a large
rebuilt fireplace with wood bressumer at the W end.
From its form and location, and the provision of a dated
plaque, it seems likely that this was originally a mill
building. The Buckler family owned the nearby great house, but
the family here is reputed to have been Bristow.
