House, then local authority offices, converted into police station 1987. Mid-late
C18 with later alterations. Pink/brown brick in English bond and English garden
wall bond, Westmorland and Welsh slate roofs. L-shaped plan with wing to rear right;
2 storeys, 1:3:1:3:1 bays. Outer bays slightly recessed from main block, but may
have once projected forward. Main block: English bond, Westmorland slate roof;
sill bands to both floors; moulded cornice; central part-glazed 4-panel door below
fanlight with Gothick glazing bars in portico with Roman Doric half-columns with
a patera on each frieze, carrying open pediment; on first floor above, staircase
window rather more than a semicircle, divided into 3 by wooden mullions, with header
arch; flanking, tripled canted bays of 4-pane sash windows with flush exposed sash
boxes and flat arches; hipped roof to main block, also to canted bays. End bays:
on each floor a matching 4-pane sash window, and in outer corners a door, of
6 fielded panels to left, 4 panels to right, each below a blocked overlight with
intersecting glazing bars and in Tuscan doorcase; moulded cornice; hipped Welsh
slate roofs. Stacks at ends of main block. Rear: irregular plan, windows of many
types. Left return: studded and vertically boarded door in C19 ashlar chamfered
raised quoined pointed-arched surround with blank shields in spandrels below hood-
mould; to its left, 2-light mullion window with round trefoiled lights and hoodmould;
also, further to rear, ground-floor sash window. Interior: C19 encaustic floor
tiles in entrance hall; mid-late C18 staircase with column-on-vase turned balusters,
formerly of open well plan above front hall, now compartmented; on both floors,
from stairs hall an elliptical arch with fluted architraves leading to rear
corridors; stairs hall cornice has fluting and acanthus leaves; rear corridors have
round arches with fluted architraves; first-floor doorways have fielded-panel
linings and original architraves (the doors having been replaced).
