Details

REMENHAM SU 78 SE 1/19 The Grotto at head of Happy Valley 26.1.67 II Grotto. C18. A long vaulted gallery cut in and built of chalk under a slope at the head of the valley, the outer face having a series of 6 arches. At each side of the grotto are flanking brick and flint structures originally representing 'Grecian ruins' now much more ruinous, reputed to be designed by James Stuart. The Grotto was approached by a tunnel from a point approximately 120 metres to the north, but the entrance to this has now mostly collapsed. Formerly part of Park Place estate. V.C.H. Vol.III p.163. B.O.E. Berkshire p.193
