6/198 2 Barns to west of Trefusis Farmhouse

GV II

2 adjoining barns over shippons. Circa late C18/early C19. Shale rubble walls, incorporating many C17 or earlier dressed granite fragments, slate sills and flat brick arches. Hipped dry Delabole slate roofs. U-shaped plan, with east west principal barn built into bank at rear and other barn running south from west end. 2 storeys. Main barn has nearly symmetrical 2:1:2 bay south front. Wider central bay, slightly projecting with original nearly central wide ground floor door (now half-blocked) and narrower loading doorway over. Small window openings to right of doorways (first floor one blocked) are probably later. Flanking 2-window bays each have doorway towards central bay. Wing, originally with symmetrical arrangement of central window openings flanked by ground and first floor doorways and with further window openings to far left and right. Symmetry is now broken by opening large doorway to ground floor left, inserting window to first floor doorway second from left and small window opening added to ground floor right. The four first floor windows are circa early C19 16-pane 2-light casements. Interiors not inspected. Adjoining building to west of main barn and further buildings beyond of similar period are becoming ruinous. These are impressive barns serving the home farm of the Trefusis Estate.
