9/118 Lyndale Cottage
GV II
House. Early C17, remodelled circa 1750, with later alterations. Rendered rubble,
asbestos slate roof with gable end stack to left, stack removed from right gable
end. Originally through passage plan with room to left and right, stair to rear of
passage, with 2-storey rear service wing to left, probably of later C17. The
partition walls to the passage have been removed.
2 storeys and attic, ground floor has 4 pane sash to right and left, the window to
left was formerly a doorway with 6-pane sash with segmental head inserted. C20 door
off-centre to right. First floor has two 4-pane sashes, central 2-light raking
dormer. Right side has battered wall.
Interior: Entrance to inverted porch with fielded panelling and half-glazed inner
door. Room to front left has C20 fireplace with cupboards to right and left with
fielded panelled doors and H-hinges. Room to right has a fine chimneypiece, with
moulded architrave, torus moulding to frieze, 2 tiers of fretwork below moulded
mantel. This is in similar style to chimneypiece at Seaward, Garrett Street,
Cawsand (q.v.). To right and left, fine cupboards with segmental heads, foliage in
fretwork, shaped shelves and panelled lower doors. Newel stair in circular stair
tower to rear of passage, small stair light, originally unglazed, with chamfered
triangular head. At first floor, 2-panelled doors to front rooms. Room to left
has panelled cupboards and chimneypiece with moulded architrave and mantel. Room to
right has eared architrave to chimneypiece with Greek key freize below moulded
mantel. At 2nd floor, 5-bay roof with chamfered and crossed principal rafters,
side-pegged collars with very pronounced camber, 2 rows of through purlins. Roof
ceiled just below apex of trusses. In the rear wing at first floor, 3-bay roof,
feet of principals only visible. Door with battens and strap hinges.
