Lawn, to the east of Mount Edgcumbe

Garden ornaments, including 4 statues, balustrade, piers, sundial, urns and steps.
Mid C19. The balustrade encloses the East Lawn by a north/south range and an
east/west range. The statues are at the east end of the lawn. There is a path
along the central east/west axis of the lawn, with sundial to centre with 4 urns
arranged in a square around it. At the west end of the path are 4 more urns.
Statue of Minerva, with helmet, serpent and staff, on square pedestal. Statue of
Diana, painted, with quiver of arrows and stag, on square pedestal which is rendered
and lined out. State of Mercury with pan pipes, painted, on square pedestal with
moulded base and top. Statue of draped seated figure, with sheathed sword and
infant at his feet, on stone pedestal with rounded front and cornice. The statues
are casts in Roman style.
The balustrade extends about 50 metres in the north/south range and about 40 metres
in the east/west range. Column balusters with plain dies on plain plinth with
moulded top rail. In the east/west range, at the south east corner, a pedestal with
a pineapple finial. Balustrade bowed out off-centre to north east, with pedestal to
left and right of bow, surmounted by limestone urns with swags of flowers; 3 steps
down from the East Lawn. The north/south range has a pair of plain square pedestals
with similar urns with swags, on each side of a flight of 7 steps with short
flanking walls with small urn to each side. At the north west end of this range, a
terminal pier with a similar urn with swags.
The sundial is a fluted limestone baluster, with bronze plate with gnomon, by
Lancaster of Devonport. 4 urns on plain pedestals around the sundial and 4 similar
urns at the west end of the path.
