Details

REDRUTH RADNOR SW 74 SW 6/294 Engine house to West Peevor Mine at SW 705 440 GV II Engine house (probably for stamps) at former tin mine; now derelict. Probably 1878. Uncoursed granite and killas rubble, with bob wall of granite, window arches of brick, brick upper stage to chimney. Rectangular plan on north-south axis, with bob wall to north, chimney attached at south-east corner. Three stages, with round-headed openings including driver's window in bob wall; former cylinder door in rear wall now collapsed. Tapered cylindrical chimney still intact, with small rectangular opening at ground level on south side, moulded cornice to stone stage, and corniced top. Much of the building heavily clad in ivy at time of survey (1988). History: mine formerly worked as West Treleigh Mine; new shaft sunk in 1878, following early success of Wheal Peevor (q.v.), and initially pumped from that mine; closed 1898 after fall in tin prices (information provided by Mr Justin Brook). Though detached from the larger site to the east, shares group value with it.
