Details
SD 90 NW CROMPTON SAINT JAMES STREET (north side) 4/29 Church of St. James - II Church. 1847. By J. Clarke for the Church Commissioners. Snecked stone with slate roof. Nave with clerestory and aisles, south-west tower and chancel with vestry and organ chamber. Gothic revival. 5-bay nave and aisles with projecting plinth and weathered buttresses. Each bay has a 2-light aisle window with plate tracery and paired lancet clerestory windows. 3-stage tower has lancet openings, octagonal stair turret, clasping buttresses, paired belfry openings and a broach spire with gabled lucarnes and a crocket finial. 3-lancet east and west windows. Interior: alternating circular and octagonal nave arcade columns with naturalistic carving to the capitals. Wall painting above moulded chancel arch. Scissor-braced roof trusses. Timber and stone fittings including pews, font, pulpit and chancel screen.
