WINKLEIGH EXETER ROAD, Winkleigh
SS 6207-6307
12/161 Little Southcott
II
House. Early C16 origins heavily remodelled in mid to late C19. Rendered and
colourwashed part rubble part cob walls. Gable-ended slate roof at lower level over
left-hand part. Large slightly projecting rubble lateral stack at front. Small
brick shaft at left gable-end.
Plan: original plan not entirely clear but may have been 3 rooms with through-
passage of which the left-hand, lower room has been rebuilt and the inner room
downgraded to outbuilding. The hall is heated by a front lateral stack but this
unlikely to be of the same date as the hall screen although the fact that this has 2
doorways suggests that it may have been reused. C20 addition at rear of left-hand
room.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 2-window front in 2 distinct parts at different
angles. The left-hand part has mid-later C19 16-pane sash window on each floor.
The part to its right has a 2-light casement on 1st floor and a single light
casement below both to the left of the wide lateral stack. To their left is C19 4-
panel door. Outbuilding to right of stack has double doors with wide loading hatch
above.
Interior: the screen passage survives but the screens are of differing dates. The
right-hand one to the hall has chamfered muntins and 2 chamfered pointed arch
doorways, the front one is considerably smaller - these features suggest an early
C16 date. The screen to the left-hand side of the passage is of a C17 date with
ovolo-moulded muntins on the passage side which are chamfered on the opposite side.
The right-hand room has a heavy chamfered axial beam, its fireplace is blocked. The
roof structure has been completely replaced in C19.
