Substantial farmhouse forming one side of a courtyard comprising stable block and
barns. C16 and C17. Cob, rendered, on stone plinth, with gabled-end wheatreed
thatched roof with jointed cruck truss possibly smoke-blackened between kitchen and
hall. Originally a 3-room, through passage plan, with added parlour wing (to
right-hand rear) and buttery (to left-hand rear). 2 storeys throughout. Long
front, with late-medieval all-stone stack towards the right end, 2 set-offs, the
topmost one moulded. The right-hand angle is brought out slightly to form a
buttress. Left-hand end stack dismantled. 2 front doorways, that to the left,
left of centre, with cyma-recta moulded surround, with scroll stops, the door
itself with fielded panels above, plain below. This formed the entrance to the
through passage. Right-hand door later; right-hand under little slate canopy,
left-hand with wooden trellis porch. Windows: timber casements 3- and 4-lights,
C19/C20, but with original irregular disposition, 4 above, 3 below. Left-hand room
internally with Thorverton stone chamfered jambs and wooden lintel, with 2 small
stone arches at foot of right-hand jamb. Chamfered lintel over door to buttery.
Large chamfer on large kitchen fireplace beam with back oven. Room to right of
passage (former hall), with rear fireplace. Thorverton stone jambs and wooden
lintel with cyma-reversa mouldings. 2 massive chamfered beams. Newel staircase
with remodelling joinery to right of fireplace. Extreme right-hand room (inner
chamber or parlour), with small fireplace, stone jambs, wooden lintel with chamfer.
This room gives into small parlour wing. Above the inner room is a chamber with
early C17 plaster ceiling with central pendant lined by curved double ribs to 4
moulded open squares. To each end moulded diamond with concave sides, thistle
and/or rose motifs at each corner. Floral plaster decoration on purlins and floral
motif on sloping soffits. C17 moulded plaster cornise on landing. Cyma-reversa
molding on first floor fireplace beam. The remainder of courtyard made up of good
C19 farm buildings attached to the house with weatherboarded fronts around a
cobbleyard and retaining early C19 timber gates.
