4/100 The Cottage - II

Cottage, said to have been used as schoolroom. Probably early C19. Colourwashed rendered cob; hipped thatched roof; brick stack at right end. Single storey brick addition at left end at rear. Plan of 1 principal heated room at the front and a 2-storey rear outshut containing services. The outshut is continued as a single-storey gabled block at the left end. The house is entered through a doorway in the outshut which is opposed to a similar doorway in the rear wall of the principal room. A straight stair runs axially against the rear wall of the principal room. The outshut may be an addition to what was originally a small 1 cell cottage. 2 storeys. 1 window asymmetrical front with a ground floor 2-light window, 6 panes per light, similar metal frame first floor 3-light window. The right return of the cottage has 3 small-pane casements. 3-plank front door in arched doorway leads into rear outshut. Interior not inspected. The cottage is on a corner site and is an example of a small cob and thatch vernacular building without any unsympathetic additions.
