Details

LODDISWELL SX 75 SW 2/83 Coombe Farmhouse GV II Farmhouse. Late C18 or early C19. Rubble, some remnants of limewash in parts, slate roof. A large house with a symmetrical south front, under hipped roof, but with a further bay at the west end in part under continuation of hipped roof swept down. Main front, now away from normal approach, 2 storeys with cellar, 1 + 3 windows; at ground floor, 3 tripartite 4:12:4-pane sashes, first floor, 3 tripartite sashes, and central 16-pane sash above gabled porch and panelled door. The end bay to left is set back slightly to emphasise the symmetry of the remainder west and plain, with one shuttered opening at eaves. The back, now the approach facade, has a scatter of windows; those to the right bay, at the sweep-down, at lower level than remainder. At ground floor a 3-light horizontal bar casement set behind wood mullion, then, set low, a broad C19 plank door, with half of a 16-pane sash to right. Beyond this a 3-light casement to a brick segmental arch and a set of stone quoins, a further wide C19 plank door, and a 3-light casement. At first floor are two 3-light and a small 2-light, with 3-light, far right. Above the first door is a tall narrow 2-light stair window; to the right of this a small eaves stack, and a small eaves stack to right return and which also has larger cropped stack near the ridge. The left return has a half-hip with central eaves brick stack, and a cellar entrance to brick arch but large quoins, below 3-light and 2-light case- ments. Interior not inspected, likely to retain original fittings.
