Farmhouse. Early C16 origin, enlarged and altered early C17, late C19 alteration
to windows, and re-roofing, C20 alterations including removal of granite window
surrounds to Sampford Manor (qv) and substantial alterations to shippon end in
progress at time of survey (September 1985). Granite rubble add slatestone with
granite dressings.Slate roofs, largely replaced in C20, rubble ridge stack with
cap to rear wing to right.
Originally a longhouse of 3-room and through passage plan, with hall and inner
room to left of passages and shippon to right; stair tower to rear of hall possibly
a late addition, and early C17 kitchen wing added to rear of passage; early C17
hall built out at front and further room added to higher and in cross wing with
former dairy to rear, and second stair set in original inner room. Irregular
plan formed by accretion, wall at higher end of hall at first floor goes right
up to apex of roof, but roof all of C19 construction.
2 storeys and 4 bays to upper end, shippon to right, all windows C20 casements
in early openings. Bay to left projects and has gable end to front, with 3-light
casement with cambered head at ground floor and similar 2-light casement at first
floor; to right side a blocked single light at ground floor with chamfered granite
surround. Second bay (former inner room) has single light at ground floor with
granite lintel and 2-light casement at first floor in hollow-chamfered granite
surround. Hall bay to right, gabled and slightly advance, has 3-light casement
with segmental head and dripmould at ground floor, 3-floor, 3-light casement with
granite lintel at first floor, granite quoins at first floor level to right.
2-storey gabled porch to right, possibly originally projecting before hall was
extended to front, has granite cambered lintel over outer entrance, with 1 jamb
remaining in situ from original 4-centred arched opening, granite monolith to
right of jamb, inner doorway of porch has tall 4-centred arched opening, granite
monolith to right of jamb, inner doorway of porch has tall 4-centred arched head,
chamfered with straight-cut step stops, door with strap hinges. Shippon has same
roof level as main range, 2-light casement with segmental head at ground and first
floor left, 4-centred arched granite chamfered opening with loading door above
with granite jambs and reset cambered timber lintel, ventilation slit at upper
level to right; to right a 3-light casement with segmental head and 3-light raking
dormer. Right lower end has 3 ventilation slits at lower level and one with granite
surround at apex of gable, drain; large granite quoins. Higher end of C17 addition
in slatestone rubble, 2-light casement with hollow-chamfered granite surround
at ground floor left, former similar casement at first floor with mullion, cill
and left jamb removed; straight joint to rear lean-to dairy of later C17 with
unglazed window opening and roof partially gone. At rear, gable end of C17 build
to right has small 4-pane light in hollow-chamfered granite surround at first
floor left; main range has single-pane light with iron stanchions in similar surround
at ground floor right, stair tower to left set in angle to rear wing, which has
pitched roof extended from main pitch, with 2-pane light at upper level.
2 storey rear wing to left has gable end with single-light in hollow-chamfered
surround at ground floor left and single ventilation slit at upper level to right,
stack not at gable end because of cavity behind flue, large granite quoins; side
of rear wing has former 3-light granite mullioned window, only lintel and cill
remaining with 2-light casement inserted, small gabled dormer, unglazed with 2-light
hollow-chamfered granite window with iron stanchions. Rear of shippon has large
C20 stack in course of construction, ventilation slit at low level and 3-light
raking dormer to left.
Interior shippon formerly had standings, front wall mostly rebuilt,. Porch leads
to passage with slate floor, rear wing has ground floor room with fireplace with
flat chamfered granite lintel, oven to rear left, at first floor space behind
flue visible, with large smoking chamber to right. Hall has fireplace with C20
wooden lintel, 2 ovens to rear and granite jamb, keeping holes to left of entrance,
solid wall to inner room with keeping hole and tall 4-centred arched granite doorway,
hollow-chamfered with convex triangular stops. Inner room has wooden newel stair
set to rear, later end room has fireplace to rear with flat granite lintel, hollow-
chamfered. Granite newel stair in rear stair tower. At first floor in C17 build
to end, front room has hollow-chamfered granite fireplace with flat lintel, room
over former dairy has ventilator window to rear and keeping hole. Flooring over
passage had trap door, possibly for taking up fleeces.
