2.10.54 opposite the Red Lion Hotel) GV II Shop and house; mid to late C17, late C18 or early C19 and late C20
alterations; smooth render on brickwork, lined as ashlar; painted
brickwork to rear, tiled roof. 'L' plan, with square stair turret
in angle, 4 windows wide to street, 3 storeys. Street front,
ground floor left, plinth, 325mm nib on left from gable up to
adjoining property for full height: plain pilaster, sash window
over grated opening to cellar, with flat head; further pilaster to
right, sash window. Six panel door: projecting fascia full length
up to late C20 shop front to right-hand half. First floor, 2
pilasters and sash windows as below, further pilaster set over
door; above plain string over whole of left, extends up to level
with left-hand edge of shop front. Over, near each end of shop
front a sash window, each sash 3 panes only. Second floor, left
half 1, right half 2 sash windows as over shop, but shallower.
Large, square brick chimney behind ridge in left half, with gable
stack on left. To rear, on right 2 two-light mullion and transom
windows to ground floor, sash window above, 4-pane casement window
on second floor. Above timber-framed gable. Gable on left return,
stair turret set back on left, with gables on adjacent faces: tall
2-light mullion and transom window to stairs. Further gable on
rear wall on left.
Interior, in left half at rear, dado rail, coved plaster cornice, 2
chamfered ceiling beams; panelling 2 panels high. Stairs around
narrow well, square, beaded newels, heavy moulded string, and hand
rail, spiral balusters on vase. Probably built as single house.
