- GV II Terrace of workers housing. Central stone plaque:- "Cobden Terrace Anno 1889 Domini"; by G. J. Skipper for William S.
Clark; builder James Pursey of Street. Squared rubble, irregularly coursed; double Roman tile roof; large red brick
stacks with oversailing courses, singly, paired and in groups of 4, coped verges with kneelers; large central cupola
with arcaded glazing and an ogee-shaped lead roof with weathervane at its apex. Elaborate Jacobean style, irregular
frontage, symmetrical about its centre. Two storeys, 2:3:1:3:1:1:1:1:1:3:1:3:2 bays; first, third, fifth, ninth,
eleventh and thirteenth bay sets in projecting wings under front facing gables; predominantly 4, 5 and 6-light
stone-mullioned windows with metal casements, under stopped labels, especially to the projecting wings; further 3-light
casements, those to the ground floor with cambered heads; single-light opening in a dressed stone surround to each
gable face. Centre 3 bays with the greatest enrichment, the outer pair on the first floor with gablets, 2-light
mullioned window to centre. Door openings with irregular treatment; Nos 20, 28, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 50 and 58 with
recessed doors in chamfered 4-centred head stone surround; Nos 22, 24, 26, 30, 32, 46, 48, 52, 54 and 56 with
projecting hipped and gabled tile porches on open timber supports and rubble plinths; simple plank doors. Central
throughway with a chamfered dressed stone opening with a 4-centred head. Left return with a projecting gable, 2, 3 and
4- light stone-mullioned windows under stopped labels. predominantly 3-light casements to rear in conforming style to
those on main elevation. Erected during a major expansion of the shoe industry in Street; the great attention to detail
and the spacious planning give this part of the town the atmosphere of a garden suburb. Group value with 2
corresponding terraces on the north side of Wilfrid Road, Lawson Terrace (qv), and Wilfrid Terrace (qv). (McGarvie M.
