ASHWELL COTTESMORE ROAD (South side) No. 5, roofed gate and wall

(Formerly listed as Post Office No. 5, roofed gate and wall)

GV II Former range of almhouses, later a Post Office and house, together with gate and wall of c1858. By William Butterfield for Viscount Downe. Red brick and rubble stone, part whitewashed, and timber framing with whitewashed nogging. Plain tile half hipped roof with bracketted eaves and 2 brick ridge and 1 brick rear part re-built stacks. 1 storey in Tudor style, L plan, wing on left projecting forward to road. Post Office at the front of wing with C20 door, 2-light casement window and C20 1 storey extension to left. 2 probably original small wings behind this. On right return a door, 2 3-light casement windows, door, 2 1-light casements, and door. On facing range 2 doors, a 1-light casement door, 2 3-light casements, door and a 1-light casement. Doors are plank mostly with wooden Tudor arch applied to frame. The garden in front of facing range and inner return is divided from road by whitewashed brick and rubblestone wall. Roofed gate similar in style to a lychgate with 2 piers in similar materials and hipped plain tile roof. Wooden gates and arch over. Formerly known as Widows' Yard.
