3/49 Tudor Cottage and adjoining house to east
II
Pair of houses. c.1600, with C19 and C20 alterations. Timber framing and brick, with rendered brick nogging and plain tile roof. At each end of the rear elevation, a large external lateral stack, each with 2 C20 brick stalks set diagonally, plus a brick ridge stack. 2 storeys plus garrets, 3 bays. North front has a deep rendered plinth, 2 corner posts, that to the right renewed, and 7 intermediate posts. Towards each end, a C20 Tudor arched door, each flanked to the right by a 3 light casement. Above, to the left, 2 three light C20 casements and to the right, a C19 3 light casement. The east gable has jowled corner posts, with a strut to the right, mid rail and transom. To the left, a C20 square bay window and to right, a C20 round window. Above to left, a 2 light casement and above again, a central 2 light garret casement. West gable has to left an irregular angled projection and to the right, a corner post with transom and strut. Above, wall plate and queen post truss. Rear elevation has a central post and an off-centre C20 canted bay window, flanked to left by a 3 light casement in a blocked doorway and to right by a C20 door with overlight. Above, a central gable with a 2 light sliding sash, and to left a 3 light C20 casement. The interior has in the south east corner an outstanding early C17 moulded ashlar chimney piece with Tudor arched opening, decorated spandrels, reeded frieze and above, 2 cornices separated by a foliate frieze. Tudor Cottage is said to contain a similar chimney piece. Principal rafter roof with double notched purlins and a queen post truss to the west and collars to the central bay, 2 mud and stud partitions, one with a plank door. Central winder stair in framed enclosure, and winder stair to garret with square newel. heavily chamfered span and spine beams.
