6.6.61 GV II* Church. C12-C17 and C19. Coursed rubble stone with plinth, quoins and
stone dressings and Collyweston slate roof. W tower, nave, aisles, chancel
and S porch. Tower of early C12 of 3 stages. Small W window with stained
glass of 1908, carved band, S shafted window with zigzag decoration,
carved band, 4 triple arched bell-openings, the central blocked, gargoyles
(complete only to E) and later battlements. Inside, fine arch to nave
with 7 roll-mouldings, decorated capitals and responds with 5 shafts.
Lozenge band over and round arched doorway probably to former W gallery.
2 bay N arcade with double chamfered arches on octagonal pier and respond
and W, now headless, figure corbel. 2 bay S arcade with double chamfered
arches on circular pier and responds. Hood moulds and label stops. 3
C19 quartrefoil clerestory windows to S and C19 3 bay roof, curved braces
to collars. In N aisle, blocked N door, with pointed arch and 3 stone
mullion windows, probably late C16/C17, of 1, 3 and 2-lights. Remains
of steps and arch leading to former rood loft. Double chamfered chancel
arch. In chancel, tall stone mullion windows similar to N aisle, 2 1-lights
either side and 3-light E window. Stone benches either side and piscina.
On S side fine standing wall monument to Roger Dale, died 1623. Stone,
alabaster and marble, part painted and gilded. Aedicule with Corinthian
columns and cartouche of arms over the entablature. 2 arches under, within
which 2 facing kneeling statues of Dale and wife with, between, double
sided prayer desk. Similar but smaller statues of 2 daughters on front
of plinth. Ornamented with carved draped heads and cherubs. Chancel has
C19 4 bay roof with curved braces to collars. In S aisle further stone
mullion windows, one with panels of C17 painted glass and C12 S doorway,
altered C13. S porch possibly late C15/16. Font, probably C13, square
with diagonal chamfers at top, on C19 piers and plinth. C18 and early
C19 wall monuments. Pevsner.
