SO 75 NE MARTLEY B 4204 (s.w. side) 6/99 Laughern House School
12.11.51 (formerly listed as
Laughern House) - II* Former country house, now school. Late C18 with C19 and C20 alterations,
encasing C16 house. Brick with ashlar dressings, and timber-frame with brick
infill, low hipped slate roofs, tiles to C16 part. Shallow U-plan to brick
building with C16 timber-frame house filling U. 3 storeys, 2nd floor a built-
up attic, moulded ashlar plinth, stone coped parapet moulded string above
first floor, plain band to ground floor and sill band; 5 bays, central one
pedimented and faced in ashlar, sash windows: 8 panes second floor, 16-pane
first floor, 20-pane on ground floor, the last with stone architraves (possibly
dropped, if sill band no longer at sill level); central bay: pediment with
moulded cornice crowns attic; first floor has tripartite sash with engaged Ionic
columns in a panel; pedimented tetrastyle Doric portico to ground floor with
moulded and dentilled cornice, door below 6-pane rectangular fan light with
pointed heads to 3 upper panes; flanked by 10-pane sashes, door panelled.
Interior: several doorcases survive with broken pediments and dentilled
cornice, with panelled doors. Rear elevation: timber-frame building visible,
with gabled cross-wing, much restored in C19. The framing is visible in the
ceiling of the kitchen to the right, but not elsewhere internally, and is
3 square panels high externally. (VCH, Vol 4, page 291).
