GV II
Large house. C18, perhaps with early C19 alterations. For Chaytor family. Roughcast rubble, artificial stone slate roof. 2 ranges at right angles. Garden front facing south probably of early C19 date, perhaps by John Foss of Richmond. 2 storeys, 1:5:1 bays. Rusticated quoins to right. Sandstone ashlar surrounds to openings. Central doorway below fanlight, glazed as sash window with glazing bars, in Roman Doric pedimented portico. Above, round-headed window with intersecting glazing bars, keystone and impost blocks to surround. End bays of semi-circular bows with tripartite sash windows with glazing bars separated by Roman Doric engaged columns. Other windows, sashes with glazing bars. Blank pediment on parapet over central 3 bays, chimney-stack at left end. Lead rainwater goods, butts embossed ' C '. Rear range of 2½ storeys, with 5 bays facing west. Sash H I 1746 windows with glazing bars, and round-headed landing window. Projecting chimneybreast to north. In angle between the 2 ranges, late C19 projecting porch with 2 ashlar Doric columns supporting crenellated parapet. Inside porch, part-glazed oak door in round-headed doorway with rusticated quoined and voussoired surround. Interior: in south range, good Regency rooms with original doors, fireplaces, shutters and ceilings, including 1 with banded reeds. In the west range, at its junction with the south range, an early- mid C18 open-well staircase with turned balusters.
