ST.HELEN WITHOUT FARINGDON ROAD SU49NE (East side) Shippon 8/135 The Manor Preparatory School 09/02/66 (Formerly listed as Manor House, including adjoining outbuildings) GV II Large house, now school. Late C17. Rendered limestone rubble and brick to right; steeply-pitched and hipped old tile roof; brick rear lateral and internal stacks. Central staircase plan. 2 storeys and attic; symmetrical 5-window range. C20 door: late C18 pedimented architrave with engaged Tuscan columns. Late C18 six-pane sashes. Moulded wood cornice: similar sashes in 3 hipped roof dormers. Left side wall has late C18 sash window and Venetian window with keyed stone architrave. To rear right is C18 two-storey bay of coursed limestone rubble and brick with gabled old tile roof, brick end stack and sashes: C18 one-storey service range to rear of coursed limestone rubble with gabled old tile roof: remodelled in C20. C18 service room (wash-house) to rear left of similar materials with hipped roof. Interior: hall has some C18 panelling and open-well staircase: turned newels with gadrooned bases, elaborate fret-cut balusters and barley-sugar balusters. Room to right is panelled with fielded bolection-moulded panels. First floor has panelled room to front left, and bolection-moulded stone fireplace to right. Early C14 2-light window reset in rear wall. Site was owned by Abingdon Abbey: became known as Calcott's Place and house was rebuilt after its destruction in the Civil War.
