CORMONT ROAD SE5 (north side)
Kennington Boys' School

II

1897-1898 by T J Bailey, extended in 1912. Board school of LCC, similar to Vauxhall Manor School Annexe in Kennington Road. Large, symmetrical building of seven sections. Main central block of three tall storeys, five windows, under high pitched, hipped tiled roof with three tiny lucarne-like dormers whose swept roofs become spirelets. Flanking six-storey square towers have corbelled octagonal angle turrets and tall swept slated roofs rising to bell stage with spirelet and vane above. Beyond are five-storey, four-bay intermediate sections with parapet fronts; outer bays of three tall storeys and attic under shaped gables with scrolled kneelers. Stock brick with dressings of red brick and stone (the latter mainly for gable and parapet copings) and terra-cotta for corbel tables at tower eaves and the larger turret corbels, and for rusticating the wall arcading of central section. Varied window shapes, much wall enrichment; a building of romance and fantasy.
