Pottery) GV II Remains of barn, sometime malt house and granary, now used as
store. C15, C17 and C19. Coursed lias, dressings in Guiting
stone, brick, tiled roofs.
PLAN: a long building with 2 parallel hipped roofs,
incorporating on the river side a section of the Abbey
Precinct wall or former barn.
EXTERIOR: to Mill Street 2 hipped ends, to left with inserted
wide garage doors, and to right a plank door at first floor at
head of flight of stone stairs carried partly on return of
stone wall and buttresses of medieval wall. At corner a brick
oriel at 45 degrees, with 4-pane fixed light under flat roof.
To left is further unit, at one time used as fire station,
with large plank doors, but with some C18 brick fabric under
hipped tiled roof.
River front has coursed lias masonry in 5 bays with 6 deep
buttresses with weathered offsets, and raised in brickwork to
eaves level. Bays 1 and 2 have inserted C19 or C20 dressed
stone blocked openings with 2-light mullioned window, bays 3
and 4 with small brick inserts, and bay 5 a large inserted
opening in dressed stone on 5 stone steps. The brick upper
level has several 2-light casements, partly concealed by
overgrowth. West end 2 gables above flat-roofed extension, and
with casements at eaves, and S front, to car park of The Bell
(qv) in English garden wall bond brickwork on offset 3-course
plinth, with various 3-light casements at levels, and door far
left.
INTERIOR: in 2 levels throughout, has series of rough
chamfered transverse beams at approx 2.5m centres and C17
propped purlin trusses. In poor condition at time of survey.
