5/49 The Old Rectory
GV II
House. C18 with C19, C20 alterations. Brick with stone dressings, stuccoed. 2-span slate roof with 2 gable stacks and 1 ridge stack. 2 storeys and attic. South front: plinth, band and coved cornice. 3 bays. Central doorway with 6-panel door with overlight. To left, a large early C19, projecting, round bay window, with flat roof, cornice with brackets and curved glazing-bar sashes. To right, a large early C19 projecting square bay with plinth and hipped slate roof with modillioned cornice. Single, large tripartite glazing-bar sash with stone sill. Above in 1st storey, a central glazing-bar sash, with to left and right, single slightly larger glazing-bar sashes, all with stone sills and flat arches with keystones. Above in the roof, 3 skylights. To right, set back, a 2-storey 2-bay extension with slate roof and gable stack. C20 lean-to conservatory against lower storey. Above, 2 tall narrow casements. North front has 2 bands, quoins to right, several mullion and transom leaded casements, and an early C19 glazing- bar sash. 2 dormers with leaded casements. INTERIOR: early C19 staircase, fireplace, several panelled doors. The extension was originally built as an observatory by Rev William Pearson, a founder of the Royal Astronomical Society.
