BRANDSBY-CUM-STEARSBY TOWN STREET SE 57 SE (north side) 6/10 The Old Rectory 28.2.52 GV II*

Rectory, now house. C16 range of T-shaped plan with addition at right angles added in 1809 for Rev William Smith, MA. Older range in rubble sandstone with ashlar dressings and red and blue pantile roof; 1809 range of ashlar sandstone with Westmorland slate roof. Older range of 2 low storeys, 1:6 bays with added rear outshut; 2-storey. 2-bay x 5-bay 1809 addition at east end and facing east. Older range: mullion windows with double-chamfered surrounds, flat heads, four-centred-arched uncusped lights and sunken spandrels; to the left is an added bay with ground-floor casement window and rendered stack to left end; six ground-floor windows each of 3 lights except the 3rd, which has 5 lights probably replacing the original doorway, and,the 5th, a single-light window; first-floor windows are all of 2 lights; C19 ashlar stack to left end; large brick old stack behind the 3rd first-floor window. To right, left return of 1809 range: plinth, first-floor band, moulded cornice, parapet; tall ground- floor sash window with glazing bars, first-floor 16-pane sash window. Main front of 1809 range: 5 bays arranged 2:1:2; plinth, band, cornice and parapet as before; central door of 6 fielded panels, the top 2 glazed, below fanlight with tracery, in timber Tuscan portico with half columns and rather thin pediment; windows are sashes with glazing bars, of 15 panes and reaching down to top of plinth on ground floor, all with crown glass, and with keyed cantilevered lintels and projecting sills; hipped roof; end stacks. Rear of older range: board door and 2 renewed windows on ground floor; 2 dormer windows with cat- slide roofs above. Rear of 1809 range: mostly obscured by later kitchen exten- sions, but with round-arched landing window in gabled stair turret which also has bell. Interior: older range has original first-floor beam which indicates that the first-floor level has been raised; roof tie-beams are curved, and roof has been extended to rear over outshut; between main range and outshut are two ground-floor timber 2-light mullion windows with stanchions; in the outshut is a reused 6-panel door made from C17 battened panelling; 1809 range has doors of 6 reeded panels and matching shutters, decorative cornices; turned-baluster open- well staircase with wreathed handrail.
