Painters Farmhouse) II House. C17, C18 with C20 additions. Timber-framed, rendered on
brick plinth with C20 pargetted decoration, peg-tiled roof. L
shaped plan. One and a half and 2 storeys. Original E-W range
with N-S C18 addition at W end, then, 1964-5 raising and
expansion of C18 unit in internal angle on E side which now
contains the front door. All windows C20 casements with
rectangular leaded panes.
S garden elevation: original frontage. One and half storeys, 3
window range, two 4-light and one 3-light window. Roof
half-hipped at both ends, tall central stack, 2-light gabled
dormer window immediately to E. W end elevation: 2-storeys,
original sweep of roof of old house to S continued to N and
hipped. External stack near E end, reduced at eaves and
rebuilt. Ground floor has C20 2-leaf stable door at N end with
bracketed flat hood, 3-light window at S end. First floor, two
2-light and one 3-light window. N end elevation: 2 storeyed
hip roofed block with catslide roof to N of C20 addition. 2
ground floor 3-light windows. Behind, to E, N wall of original
block blank. E elevation: now front. Original one and a half
storey, half hipped gable end to S with principal original
framing exposed but also has inserted sham studding between
middle rail and tie-beam. Ground floor 4-light window, upper
3-light window over tie-beam. To N all C20 work. Ground floor
principal doorway, door boarded with Tudor arched head and
battens. 3-light window adjacent each side, to N 1
single-light window. Above, flat roofed 4-light dormer window
through catslide roof.
INTERIOR: much altered but E fireplace of old stack, with
jambs rebuilt, has original oak mantel beam. W fireplace
reconstructed. Axial floor joists E and W from stack are
original. Upper floor in C18 addition shows wall plates of
that period for one and a half storeys, now raised to full 2
storeys. RCHM Mon.133 records C18 work as 1752.
