SAFFRON WALDEN TL5338 CASTLE STREET

28/11/51 Nos.5 AND 7 GV II 2 houses, probably originally one, comprising street range and
flush cross-wing on W side. C18 and C19 but no doubt earlier
core. Timber-framed, plastered, brick and weatherboard,
peg-tiled roofs. Plan L shaped, of early units plus C18 and
C20 rear additons round internal angle. 2 storeys and cellar.
Front S elevation: No.5, gabled unit, features are all of C19
refurbishment, weatherboarded gable has projecting
barge-boards with prominent side purlins and brackets. 2
window range. First floor, 2-light casement with chamfered
frame and central stile, glazing bars, 2x3 panes. Ground
floor, one similar 3-light window 3x3 panes. Simple doorway
with 4 panelled door, upper panels glazed. No.7, street range
irregular, 2 window range with central front doorway, C19 door
of 4 flush panels, upper glazing, adjacent to W, C18 sash
window with moulded architrave, glazing bars, 3x4 panes, to E,
small bay window of 3 sliding sashes with glazing bars, 6x2
panes with simple ramped leaded roof. First floor, 2 C19
2-light sliding sash windows, glazing bars. 2x2 panes.
Rear N elevation: peg-tiled street range and wing projecting
to N, ground floor lean-tos with slate roofs continued down as
catslides. No.7 has C18 red brick stack, partially rendered,
rising centrally through roof pitch between house and lean-to.
Lean-to timber-framed with traces of `fan combed' pargetting.
2 C20 casement windows, one metal framed. No.5 has C20
lean-to, red brick with red brick stack through roof pitch
above ground floor fully glazed door and 3-light casement
window. N end of W gable of C19 red brick with C20 Fletton
brick, rebuilt gable and concrete window lintel on first
floor. Ground floor, C19 boarded door approached by steps,
boarded cellar door adjacent. Above, C20 top-opening casement
window. To E, simple small casement window. First floor C19
sash window with glazing bars. 3x4 panes (under concrete
lintel), also, smaller C20 top-opening metal casement window.
W end elevation: whole flank wall of cross-wing (No.5) C20
rebuilt in Fletton bricks. Central C19 red brick stack at roof
apex. Single segment headed ground floor C19 sash window with
glazing bars, 3x4 panes.
INTERIOR: No.5, all now in mid C19 style. No.7, ground floor
has some slender C18 studding visible also some C19 interior
dado boarding remains.
