House, at street junction with Church Street. c1800, but
probably C17 core. Red brick, tuck pointed, clay and peg-tiled
roof, also slates, red brick stack. L shaped plan. 2 storeys
and attic. Front E elevation: 4 bays, 3 window range, doorway
and stack in bay 3 from S. Gambrel half hipped roof. Doorway,
cornice hood with plain pilasters to jambs, over-light with
diagonally crossed glazing bars, door of 6 flush bead moulded
panels, 2 boot scrapers. Windows sashes with glazing bars, 4x4
panes, ground floor segment headed. N elevation to Church
Street. Gable end of principal range with early C19 ground
floor doorway with cornice hood, ornate frieze, door of 6
panels, upper 2 glazed, lower 4 flush bead moulded. Adjacent
segment headed blind window aperture. First floor similar flat
headed blind window. 2 casement windows, 1 single-light, 2x2
panes, one 2-light 4x3 panes. Attic casement window 2x2 panes.
To W, mid C19 wing of 2 window range. All windows C20, 3 of 2
lights 4x3 panes, one first floor 2x3 panes. Rear W elevation:
principal range single ground and first floor C19 windows with
glazing bars, 3x4 panes. W wing. Ground floor C20 French
window with overlight 3x6 panes, second C20 fully glazed door
with overlight 3x6 panes. First floor, C19 segment headed
window with glazing bars, 4x4 panes. 2 red brick stacks
through roof pitch. To W, 2-storey stable red brick, slate
roof. Central segment headed archway with hay loft door above.
2 first floor and one ground floor oval statted vents. Ground
floor C19 2-light casement window with glazing bars 4x4 panes.
INTERIOR: now essentially C20 but plan of principal range
suggests C17 origin as a 3-celled lobby-entrance house.
Stable, loft floor and 2 stalls remain. The adjacent
carriageway at N end of No.9 Common Hill (qv) belongs to
No.10.
