01/11/72 No.21 GV II House. 1851, refurbished in C20 for offices. Timber-framed and
plastered, red brick, slate and clay tiled roofs. Plan L
shaped. 2 storeys and partial attic.
Front W elevation: red brick, ruddled and tuck-pointed, 5
bays, 4 window range, windows stuccoed voussoirs, sashes with
thin glazing bars, 3x4 panes. Doorway second bay from S,
moulded cornice and hood, moulded architrave, over-light, door
of 6 moulded panels, second smaller simple doorway in N bay,
stuccoed voussoir, over-light, 6 panel door. Slated roof has N
end ridge stack, 2 further stacks behind roof at centre and S
end. Rear E elevation: 2 conjoined brick and slated gabled
wings and, to N, deeper timber-framed wing with clay tiled
gambrel roof. C20 deep ground floor lean-to felted porch in
internal angle. Brick units and some burnt headers, scored
pointing and, inset, an inscribed stone plaque, C.P.1851. 3
first floor sash windows with ruddled and tuck-pointed
voussoirs, glazing bars, 3x4 panes. Ground floor, C20 2-light
window, concrete lintel and 2x2 casement window. Porch, C20,
plain door with upper light and single-light casement window.
N wing. C20 casement windows, ground floor to attic, 4, 3, and
2-light respectively, in S return wall first floor single
light C20 casement window. S end elevation: gable of street
range and short rear wing in red brick, some burnt headers,
scored pointing. Single ground floor C20 rear window, concrete
lintel, 3 lights.
INTERIOR: principal blocks plain, C20 refurbished. N wing has
some C19 framing members exposed in pine, tie-beams with knee
braces, floor joists of deep, thin section. The N wing
probably pre-dates the brick building with which it was
incorporated in major brick enlargement of 1851.
