28/11/51 Nos.34, 36 AND 38 GV II Terraced row of houses. Early C16, with C18 additions and
refenestration, C20 restoration. Timber-framed, partly exposed
and plastered. Plan, long rectangle of street range with
irregular rear projections. 2 storeys and cellars. Front E
elevation: long jetty range, first floor framing exposed, 4
bays, close studding with tension brace at S end. Principal
jetty joists and support brackets. Large rectangular stack at
S end in red brick partly rendered. First floor, 4 windows,
S-N, 2x2 paned casement, two 2-light sliding sash windows 4x3
panes, C20 3-light casement window with leaded glazing build
round early C16 oriel with moulded projecting sill. Ground
floor, S-N, single-light casement window, sash window with
glazing bars, 4x4 panes, C20 fully-glazed door 3x5 panes set
under original C16 4-centred arched door head, hollow
chamfered and with flower and leaf decorated spandrels, C19
4-panelled door and 4x3 paned sliding sash window together
under C16 rectangular framed and moulded twin shop window
frames. Cellar opening below with top-hung wooden boarded
door, C20 2x2 paned casement window with blocked cellar
opening below now with air vent. Rear, W elevation: has gabled
additions renovated in C20.
INTERIOR: not inspected but plan in Stenning DF Fig.19, p.38
of C16 layout shows doorway with decorated head leading to
cross passage with rear service and stair doorway. Shop to N
with service rooms behind, hall to S of cross passage with
internal fireplace at S end and adjacent parlour doorway
opening. N end door led to an original through way to rear,
the N bay being, originally, a separate unit from the rest.
