GV II

Carriageway. Early C16. Timber-framed and plastered, peg tile roof. 2 storeys. Rectangular plan. S elevation, to street: portal, W side restored in C19. Posts have medieval pilasters with capitals, leaf decorated spandrel to arch bracing of head. Above, C19 display board with leaf copying those below `W.Hart, est. 1836', firm of printers and stationers, still extant. Above, timber-framed wall, plastered with simple combed pargetting, central C19 sash window, 3x4 panes, roof half hipped at E end. Rear, N elevation: arch braced portal, as front but undecorated. First floor, over carriageway, lath and plaster with central boarded door with ventilation slits, simple fixed window each side. Room now isolated, as no access exists from either side. Carriageway side walls to E, heavy central cross framing with close studded infilling, remnant of capital on central post. Ground floor arch-headed doorway at rear with leaf decorated spandrels and moulded jambs. W side cross framing with pair of upper stud braces, side doorway at rear similar to one on E wall but head restored in plain boarding. Timber framing continues from carriageway on W side as part of No.26 (qv), along alley with later brick infilling and replacement. Original moulded joists of high ceiling remain within carriageway. The carriageway, together with Nos 20, 20A and 26 (qv) has the shape of a typical large medieval inn.
