House. C17, early C19 addition, C20 refurbishment.
Timber-framed and plastered, also C20 brickwork, peg-tiled
roof, red brick stacks. Plan irregular L shape of original
block with C19 wing plus additional C20 side projections. 2
storey and attics.
S front elevation to Pound Walk, all windows and doors of the
house are C20. 2 window range and doorway with large stack in
line behind. Half hipped roof. Doorway, flat cornice hood on
brackets, door has lower boarding and upper glazing 2x3 panes.
3 windows, (W ground floor window removed), 3-light casements
with glazing bars, 3x2 panes. To W, set back and on slightly
lower level small C20 wing, peg-tiled with 2-light casement
window. Rear N elevation: house has deep catslide roof to
ground floor lean-to, roof pitch broken by large gabled dormer
window in line with stacks with 2-light casement window.
Below, stable style door and 3 casement windows, one 3-lights,
one 2-light and one single light. Deep single storey wing at E
end projecting to N, hipped roof with gables. French window,
4x5 panes. Behind, to E, side of C20 single storeyed addition,
2-light casement also E facing dormer window above with minor
stack in front.
E end elevation: house block gable at S end with roof hip and
2 protruding wall plates, similar 3-light casement window on
both storeys and attic. To N, single storey C19 wing, mark of
2m C20 extension to N visible. Two 2-light casement windows.
Small ridge stack towards S end, also, dormer window with
2-light casement window. In front, 2 conjoined C20 gabled
ground floor extensions, one a porch with boarded `stable'
style door. Other has 3 light casement window. W side
elevation to Little Walden Road. House end gable with rear
out-shut. Half hipped roof gable has attic 3-light casement
window with glazing bars, 3x3 panes, ground floor C20 3-cant
bay window, corbelled out, flat roof, glazing bars 4x4 panes.
Brick plinth of house deep to accommodate ground levels.
Behind to N, single storey C19 wing with three 2-light
casement window, small stack towards S end. Side of large rear
dormer window through main roof pitch N of principal stack.
INTERIOR: mainly now C20 but enough framing exposed to see
3-celled lobby entrance form. Ground floor originally though
only 2 rooms with major one (hall) 2 bayed, to E with 2 lamb's
tongue chamfered binding joists. Common joists axial to house.
Single bay W room (parlour) has central major bridging joist
with lamb's tongue chamfer stops. Common joists transverse.
Original rear stair tower framing rising to the attics partly
visible encapsulated in lean-to probably of slightly later
date. First floor room over `hall' and attic above have stud
mortices and wattle groove surviving from 3-celled
partitioning. Attic, trapped side purlin roof with cambered
collars (for head room). The building is of a classic house
style common in England in the C17.
