Nos.2-28 (Even)) GV II* Houses, in a row and one block of 3. Mainly C18 but earlier
C16 and C17 buildings remain, C20 amalgamation and renumbering
(Nos 24-28 (even) no longer exist). Timber-framed and
plastered with considerable areas of early basket and combed
pargetting, some C20 renewal, peg-tiled roofs. Front, E
elevation: continuous terrace stepped down in 4 units to
follow falling ground to S. Houses comprise single, or, now
double units, each consisting of simple 2 window range with
central boarded doors, a number of which are now renewed. One
and a half storeys with 2 gabled dormers each with sliding
sashes, glazing bars, 4x3 panes. Shared end-gable stacks.
Stepped runs, Nos 2-10 in street style but No.2 double unit,
now only one stack, windows irregular, roof break, single
stack shared with No.14. Nos 12-16 in street style, No.14 is
double unit, No.16 2 storeys with no dormers. Nos 18-20, 18
double, changing from one and a half to 2 storeys. No.20 fully
2 storeys. No.22 single one and a half storey end unit of 3
bays with single central dormer window. Rear, W elevation:
originally similar to front but N end, between Nos 12-4 have
several C20 flat roofed ground floor additions and broad C20
flat roofed dormers. No.2 has a rear C19 gabled wing. N end
elevation of No.2 has C19 decorated barge-boards as on the
Post Office (qv) across the street.
INTERIOR: Nos 4, 6, 20 and 22 inspected. Nos 4 & 6 have simple
C17/C18 framing. No.20 is earlier C17 having an axial ground
floor ceiling joist with lamb's tongue chamfer stops. No.22 is
a medieval 4-bay open hall house with crown-post roof. Central
hall area now rebuilt but both ends of hall partition frames
survive, sooted with foot-braced crown posts. The N end bay at
first floor is ceiled in but a complete crown-post roof can be
seen through rear redundant window. Robust flat laid joists
run axially in the S (service) bay. Large inserted C17 stack
set backing on to site of cross-passage with present front and
back doors denoting its position.
