BRENTWOOD TQ6391 BILLERICAY ROAD, Herongate
723-1/13/171 (North side (off))
20/02/76 Stable range 20 metres south-west of
Heron Hall
(Formerly Listed as:
BILLERICAY ROAD, Herongate
(North side)
Stables to the south-west of Heron
Hall) GV II Stable range. Late C17, extended in C18. Red and blue brick in
Flemish bond, roofed with handmade red clay tiles; C18
extension timber-framed and weatherboarded on red brick plinth
in English bond, roofed with machine-made red tiles.
EXTERIOR: main range of brick facing approximately E, one
storey with loft; timber-framed extension to S, one storey.
The main range has to the E one original 2-light casement, one
C19/20 halved door in an original frame, and one C20 halved
door and frame in an original aperture, all with segmental
brick arches, and a hipped dormer with pigeon holes. The
timber-framed extension has one C20 halved door, roof
half-hipped at S end. The rear elevation of the main range has
two C20 metal casements in original apertures with segmental
brick arches, and a hipped dormer, blocked with wood. The rear
elevation of the S extension has C20 windows and some C20
brickwork. The main range has shaped sprockets below the
eaves, and parapet gables at both ends with original
wrought-iron ties forming the letters J T. Blue headers and
red stretchers form a regular pattern. The plinth of the
timber-framed extension is of earlier bricks, probably C15 or
C16, approximately 0.60m above ground at the rear, less
elsewhere owing to the site gradient.
INTERIOR: the roof of the main range is in 4 bays, of joggled
butt-purlin construction, with rafters of horizontal section
pegged at the apices, without a ridge. The timber-framed
extension has primary straight wall bracing, one internal
tie-beam with 2 branching spur ties at each end, and a clasped
purlin roof. The brickwork, parapet gables and wrought-iron
initials are similar to those of Heron Hall (qv), and its 2
granaries (qv), and can be similarly identified with John
Tyrell.
