ALFRED GELDER STREET(North West side) Maritime Buildings II GV Office building. 1900. By Gelder & Kitchen of Hull. Brick with
granite plinth and ashlar dressings. Roof not visible. Plinth,
ground-floor lintel band, first-floor sill band, dentillated
main cornice, coped parapet. 4 storeys; 6 plus 2 windows.
Symmetrical convex main front, 6 windows, has slightly
projecting end bays flanked by enriched panelled pilasters
topped above the cornice by brick pedestals with chequerwork.
Each end bay has a central 2-storey recess containing a canted
ashlar bay window. On the first floor, a cross casement.
Above, a similar taller window with keystone, open pediment
and apron. Above again, a 2-light mullioned window. Ground
floor has a large segment-headed single-pane window with
keystone, transom and toplight with wooden mullions. In the
centre, 4 bays with identical fenestration but with wooden bay
windows. Between the windows, wide pilaster strips with
first-floor bands and chequerwork panels at their heads.
To right, a double entrance bay in a simpler style. To left,
above the main entrance, a 3-light cross casement, above it a
3-light mullioned window, and above again, a smaller similar
window. To right, over the cart entrance, similar fenestration
with 2-light windows. Ground floor has to left a main doorway
with wide segmental pediment and volutes, with corniced
granite pilasters flanking a round-arched double door and
fanlight. Above the door, a relief panel inscribed "Maritime
Chambers". To right, a square cart entrance with iron gates,
guard stones and vestigial cornice.
