ST 97 NW 8/256 Group of nine monuments in
churchyard south-west of porch
of Church of St Giles GV II
Group of nine chest tombs, C18 to early C19, mostly to members of
the Beak family. From east:
a) Charles Beak monument, early C19, ashlar with baluster angles,
two wreathed oval north plaques with sunburst between.
Inscription to C. Beak of Ford, died 1834.
b) Frances Beak monument, lm west of a), c1800, ashlar with
pulvinated frieze broken back over fluted baluster angles. Two
raised north plaques with drapery drop between, two rococo-
framed south plaques. Inscriptions to Frances Beak died 1816,
William Beak died 1819 and Susanna Beak died ?1801.
c) Charles Beak monument lm south of b), later C18, ashlar with
large draped baluster angles. Moulded base and cornice with
pulvinated frieze. Rectangular bordered fielded south plaque
with vine drop each side. Inscription to Charles Beak, died
1783.
d) John Beak monument, about lm west of b), early C19, pennant
stone with lyre ends, two north plaques with low relief female
figure and urn in pointed recess to centre.
e) Charles and Isaac Beak monuments, south of d), pennant stone,
early to mid C19, plain heavily detailed pair with sunk slab
sides and plain angle piers. North monument inscribed to
Charles Beak died 1818, the south monument to Isaac Beak died
1860.
f) Unidentified monument about 6m south of d), mid to later C18,
ashlar with two fielded north plaques and large fielded south
rectangular plaque with scroll decoration flanking. Fielded
angle piers. Moulded base and cornice.
g) Betty Beak monument about 2m south west of d), mid to later
C18, ashlar, finely detailed tall chest tomb with moulded base
and cornice, pulvinated frieze, broken forward over large
asymmetrical Baroque plaque. Flanking strips, each of two
fielded panels, and slim baluster angles. Large raised fielded
south plaque. Inscription to Betty Beak died 1771.
h) William Beak monument about 2m south of g), later C18, ashlar
finely detailed chest tomb, oval north plaque with foliate
framing and drapery drop flanking, baluster angles -and moulded
base and cornice with pulvinated frieze. Fielded rectangular
south plaque. Inscription to William Beak died ?1777.
