TL5338 ABBEY LANE 669-1/1/10 (South side) Wall along south side of Abbey Lane

II

Wall. Stretching 112m along S side of Abbey Lane and turning for 25m at W end, bounding site of an Anglo-Saxon cemetery and now containing C20 development. C19. Flint and erratics in panels with red brick framing, deep upper brick band with coping of cobbles. Approx 3m high, shaped up to keep height towards W end. Original entrance gateway at NW corner with red brick piers, each has upper cap-stone with ball. 3 further openings cut through, simple garage entry with concrete lintel towards E end. Two C20 arched entry ways in N-S stretch at W end. Wall has continued S but now tapers rapidly to ground where removed. The wall and Abbey Lane retain the line of a principal road through and out of the medieval town and the turn S follows the Repell Ditches or `magnum fossatum' of the earlier C13.
