Houses, now shops and offices. Late C18 to C17 and earlier core. Partly painted brick; slate roof with central gable; 2 brick ridge stacks. 3-unit plan. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys and cellar; 8-window range: (1 blocked) 6/6 sashes under gauged brick flat arches; storeyband; three 6/6 and 3/6 sashes; moulded wood eaves-cornice continuing over slightly protruding central gabled bay. Early C20 and mid C20 shop fronts to Nos.38-40. No.41: late C20 shop front incorporating earlier half-glazed door and plain overlight, in moulded case, flanked by shop windows in moulded cases with ornamental pilaster glazing bars, under modillioned wood hood, which continues over Nos 39 and 40. Passage to left of No.41, to rear, displays ceiling joists. No.41 displays timber-framing in rear wall (interior), and 3rd floor (exterior). No.40: 2-storey C16 timber-framed wing to rear, of box framing with plastered brick infill; moulded bressumer on chamfered brackets and pilasters; C19, 4 panel door. INTERIOR: No.38: late C18/early C19 dogleg staircase with turned balusters and newels; plank door to stairs. 2nd floor: C19 corner fireplace; wall cupboard; architraves; 2-panel door; 4- and 6-panel doors. 1st floor: 2-panel door; wall cupboard; architraves. Cellar: stone-lined. No.39: mutilated late C18 staircase from 1st floor with moulded rail and turned balusters and newel; early C18 upper sash to stairwell light. 2nd floor: early C19 wall cupboard; 4-panel door with architrave. 1st floor: 4-panel door; C17 timber-framing exposed in rear wing. Ground floor: rear wing: massive exposed posts; chamfered ceiling beams. Cellar: chamfered ceiling beam; partly stone-lined. No.40: late C18/early C19 dogleg staircase with turned newels and balusters. 2nd floor: 4-panel doors. 1st floor: exposed posts; 4-panel doors. Ground floor: exposed posts and C17 box framing; ogee stop-chamfered ceiling frame. Cellar: chamfered ceiling beams. No.41: early C19 dogleg staircase with moulded rail and turned balusters and newels. 2nd floor: exposed C16 and C18 timber-framing. 1st floor: exposed C16 and C18 framing; window architraves. Ground floor: exposed C17 framing; massive post; worked lintels; cast-iron fluted pillar with foliate capital; C19 wall cupboard with glazed sliding doors; 4-panel door. Cellar: reused moulded, and chamfered beams; reset carved barge board fragment.
