TL 4321 LITTLE HADHAM THE FORD

Hadham Ford 9/2 Houghtons - GV II House. C16, extended to E and S and floor inserted in C17,
extended to SE and roof raised in C18, extended to SW and shop
front added on N in later C19, converted to house, N gable added,
and linked to former granary and bakery to W in earlier C20.
Irregular, 2 storeys, timberframed, facing N. Ground floor
renewed in red brick. Upper floor with plaster between exposed
timbers. Steep pitched old red tile roofs, gabled. N range
older, with W part originally single storey (now entrance hall).
E part has lower ceiling with exposed joists and chamfered
crossbeams and axial beams and lateral chimney at junction with
C17 rear wing, now the kitchen, having a tumbled brick gable
parapet on S. Early C18 SW wing is timberframed with an axial
beam, external gable chimney and an C18 staircase with barley
sugar twisted balusters, 2 panel doors, 1 ovolo moulded, with HL
hinges, and a complete 3-light mullioned window as a borrowed
light to a closet over stair, with original plate casement and
leaded glazing. C19 SW extension with plastered walls and low
pitched tiled roof. High single storey flint and brick bakery to
W and 2 storeys timberframed granary adjoining to SW now part of
house, with oven said to be incorporated in fireplace. Cross
beams exposed in bakery. Fine mid C18 corner cupboard in NE
corner of Ground floor, with half-dome, shaped shelves, fretted
dado and arched and coved cornice. Deep C16 moulded fireplace
beam re-used in entrance hall. Name refers to former shop use as
'Houghton, grocer and draper' in early C20 (photo in house).
C18/C19 pump on post fixed to rear wall.
