ST 67 SE WICK AND ABSON C.P. BARROW HILL (west side) 7/380 The Chestnuts - II House. C17 original building to rear, some C18 alterations, completely
remodelled and refronted early C19 with some C20 alterations. Coursed squared
limestone rubble, stone dressings and quoins, ashlar porch, slate roofs with deep
eaves on wooden brackets at gable ends. Large front block with lower rear wing
with 2-span roof forming T-plan. Early C19 Italianate style. 2 storeys and 3
windows, central bay with shallow gable broken forward; ground floor has 2 sashes
in raised moulded architraves with cills on consoles, central flat-roofed porch
has double doors with segmental head, keystone, cornice and parapet; first floor
has 2 round-headed windows with glazing bars, central paired narrow round-headed
window in recessed bay with raised moulded architrave; band course over ground
floor windows to left and right, string course running to imposts of round-headed
windows, wooden corbels under eaves of gable. Left return has similar ground
floor sash, band course returned, similar first floor window with string course.
Lower 2-storey wing to rear has two 2-light casements and door with segmental
head, first floor has 2-light casement with segmental head, single light and small
sash in flat stone surround. Right return of house as left, with cellar opening.
Rear wing to right has small sash, 16-pane sash, 3-light casement with timber
lintel at ground floor, first floor has two 2-light casements of varied sizes.
Rear has 3-light casement with timber lintel at ground floor left, some leaded
lights remaining, C20 single storey flat-roofed extension with door and 2 windows,
first floor has round-headed window left and right as on front. Interior: not
inspected.
