TQ 2783 SW and SE CITY OF WESTMINSTER REGENT'S PARK NW 1 13/6; 14/4 Macclesfield Bridge on Avenue Road axis including 5.2.70 north gate G.V. II Canal road bridge, 1815-16, James Morgan, engineer for the Regent's Canal Company and Nash's assistant in Office of the Woods and Forests. Brick and cast iron. Span of 3 shallow segmental brick arches carried on 2 sets of 5, Coalbrookdale, cast iron Greek Doric columns with cross vaulting between capitals. Blind oculi in spandrels. c 1874 renewed brickwork infill to side arches into abutments. Flat road deck,with stone coping,has cast iron balustrade with lattice pattern panels, terminating in stone piers surmounted by enriched lampstandards with mid C20 Nico type lanterns. Macclesfield Bridge is popularly known as "Blow-up Bridge", from the 1874 explosion of a powder barge beneath it, hence the later brickwork infill of the repair.
