GV II

House, now 3 houses. Early C18 for the Wyborn family,altered and extended 1915 and 1931 for Gilbert Elliot. Red brick and plain tiled roof. Planned around a small central courtyard with large C20 wing to rear. Two storeys and basement with attic with plinth and modillion eaves cornice to hipped roof with 4 hipped dormers and stacks to rear left and rear right. Central projecting 2 storey porch, square on ground floor and canted on first floor. Regular fenestration of 6 glazing bar sashes on each floor, with 5 on central porch and 4 basement openings. Central, 6 panelled door with lion head and Tudor flower ornamentation, within porch with gauged round headed doorway, keyed with cartouche over, the keystone inscribed: G.C.E. Flight M.E. of 3 steps with plain iron rails. The porch and part of the right half of the front are C20 additions and repairs after a fire. Two storey canted bay on right return, part of the C18 building. Central courtyard, originally with well, exposing the plinth, plat band and basket arched openings of the C18 building. Interior: entrance hall and stairs extensively wainscotted, with plaster ceiling and frieze, part reportedly retained from an earlier Jacobean building, part 1915 copy. Turned baluster stair. Attached to rear block is a small C18 outhouse with inglenook and bread oven. Hull Place was the principal manor of Sholden, the seat of the Wyborn family, bought by Gilbert Elliot early C20, for 20 years Chairman of National Sporting Club. Vice President of the British Boxing Board of Control, and the introducer to this country of ju-jitsu. The panelling and plasterwork may be genuine survivals, or part of the improvements he made to the house 1915 for a royal visit and 1931. His architect is reputed to have been Sir Edwin Lutyens (See: Igglesden,XXX, 1935, 59 ff; see also W. Stebbing. A sketch of the History of the Parish of Sholden, 1951, p. 10 ff).
