House, 1911 by SidneyThtchell for Leslie Paton, with library of 1919 by
C F A Voysey. Ashlar facing, roof, obscured. 4 storeys, basement and attics. 3
bays. Ground floor entrance to right betw.ten console brackets which with
bracket to left support geometric iron balcony to let floor. Canted bay window
to left, with small paned timber casements and fixed or top hung lights above
dentiled transome. Double-leaved glazed mahogany doors beneath glazed over-
light. First floor tall storey, small paned windows comprising French windows
with fixed lights above. Each set in moulded stone architrave beneath bay-leaf
frieze under shallow bracketed canopy. 2nd floor similar casements in moulded
stone architraves beneath shallow cornicesover pulvinated frieze, plain apron
below, each window set forward minimally. Moulded band at upper floor storey
level. Small paned casements between vertically set garlands. Continuous
moulded band above, articulated across the bays. Modillion cornice. Balus-
traded parapet following the rhythm of the facade. 3 gabled dormers with small
paned casements. Party wall brick stacks. Interior: Unaltered example of
early C19 townhouse interior, noted for its Voysey library. Window redesigned
accommodating lowered ceiling. Fitted with opaque glass,, typical of Arts and
Crafts taste. Original fittings. Sequence of mahogany (to suit existing
work). Book cases, cupboards and desk, filling 3 sides of room, designed to
range with existing fireplace, and retaining Voysey door furniture and other
metalwork. First floor drawing room. Fireplace, overmantel, bookshelves and
decorated frieze all in timber. Single and double-leaf mahogany doors of high
quality timber. Ground floor dining room, oak panelled, with typical plaster-
work ceiling and walls. Mahogany stair, with square newels, turned balusters,
original red lacquer work to skirtings and dado rails. Rare survival of
unaltered Voysey interior set in an existing building.
