20.10.54 walls and gate to the east GV II House, garden walls and gate. An early C18 remodelling of a circa mid/late
C17 house, parts of which may be earlier. Close-studded framed construction,
the front and return walls rebuilt in Flemish bond brick to the ground floor,
the first floor tile hung; west end of the north west wing brick; peg-tile
roof; brick stacks. Plan: The house faces east across Matfield Green. Overall L-plan, the main
block 3 rooms wide with a central unheated entrance hall and principal rooms
to left and right, heated from end stacks. 2 phase rear right (north west)
service wing at right angles, heated from an end stack. The main range has a
rear outshut. The framing that survives on the rear wall suggests that a C17
house has been remodelled and upgraded. The service wing, which may
originally have been unheated, appears to have been extended or rebuilt at the
west end. Exterior: 2 storeys, cellar and attic. Extremely attractive symmetrical 4-
window east front with a moulded fascia at first floor level and moulded eaves
cornice. Gable-ended roof with end stacks. Central C18 half-glazed front
door with fielded panels and a flat porch hood on moulded brackets. Evidence
of blocked windows to left and right of the door, 4 first floor and 2 ground
floor C18 12-pane sash windows with margin glazing and louvred sun shutters.
2 attic dormers with cambered lead roofs and moulded cornices, glazed with 2-
light small-pane casements. The right return of the main block has an C18
half-glazed 2-panel door in the gable end. The wing has one ground floor 3-
light casement with square leaded panes and quadrant catches. The roof of the
main block is carried down as a catslide over the rear outshut and has 3 flat-
roofed dormers. Early C19 or earlier. Red brick garden wall to the east has
an iron rail on the top with spear finials and a pretty wrought and cast iron
garden gate with an S-shaped diagonal brace and verticals with spear finials
with fleur-de-lis finials to the styles. Interior: Exposed ceiling beams to the entrance hall are of slender scantling
with scroll stops. The right hand room has a large open fireplace with scroll
stops. Good set of C18 2-panel doors throughout. The stair rises from the
rear of the entrance hall, within the outshut. The framed rear wall of the
main block survives to sole plate level.
