ARTHINGTON ARTHINGTON LANE SE 24 SE LS 21 (north side, off) 6/85 Arthington Hall - GV II

Country house. Mostly early to mid C18 rebuilding of earlier house, altered and extended in later C19 (by Waterhouse). Coursed dressed sandstone, slate roof. Irregular plan, of which the principal element is a rectangular front - range. Two storeys, 9 x 5 bays, in classical style; symmetrical facade, with 5-bay centre breaking forwards slightly (formerly pedimented); former porch replaced with single-storey ashlar conservatory of 5 x 3 bays, with pilasters separating very large windows which fill each bay (except entrance in centre), each window having 4 tall panes in each leaf, cornice and panelled parapet (concealed by creeper at time of survey); otherwise, slightly- recessed sashed windows on each floor, those at 1st floor with margin panes; cornice and balustraded parapet carried round the whole. Hipped roof of low pitch with 2 ridge chimneys. Left return wall has cornices to ground floor windows; added 2-bay wing to rear, the 1st bay with large canted bay window at ground floor, and 2 dormer windows above, with pedimented surrounds, and the other 2 full storeys with a balustraded parapet. Right-hand return wall, stepped out towards the rear, has, inter alia, the architrave of a former doorway relocated in the rear portion.

Interior: the principal feature of interest is an oval stairwell to the rear of the entrance hall, which has in the centre an unusual wooden flying staircase mounting in 2 flights and returning in one, with open string and slender turned balusters and handrail which carry round the landing surrounding the central well; this landing surrounded by an Ionic pilastrade, with entablature and dentilled cornice, under a domed ceiling with central skylight; panelled doors with moulded architraves and cornices.
