Clawson Lodge GV II House, now BUPA centre. 1885. By Watson Fothergill of
Nottingham for Mr Doubleday, lace manufacturer. Red brick,
with blue brick dressings, and timber framing with patterned
brick nogging. Gabled and hipped plain tile roofs with 3 tall
moulded brick stacks.
Sandstone and blue brick plinth. Various blue brick bands to
the ground floor. Windows are mainly sashes, some with wooden
cross-mullioned frames. Ground floor windows segment-headed.
Entrance front, to south, has to left a canted bay window, 2
storeys, 3-lights. On the ground floor, single sashes with
trefoil upper lights. Above, a window with cross framed side
lights. To right, a gabled porch, 2 storeys, partly filled by
a C20 staircase, with a 6-panel part-glazed door and
sidelights with leaded glass. Above, a timber-framed oriel
window on stone brackets.
Garden front, to east, has to left a wooden framed octagonal
pavilion with conical roof and windows to each face with
trefoil headed upper lights. To right, cross framed windows, 2
and 3-lights, with trefoil headed upper lights. Above, a
similar 3-light window to left, and 2 cross framed windows to
right.
Rear service wing has a round tower with conical roof and lead
finial.
INTERIOR has original wooden stair with turned shafts and
framed balusters. Moulded span beams, original doors and
cornices.
